“Quest for Speed” provides a comprehensive social and technological history of the emergence of bicycle racing and bicycle technology between 1867 and 1903, in Britain, France and the United States. It argues that there was a symbiotic relationship between the growth of the sport and the growth of the industry - each needed the other to improve issues of technical construction, design and usability. The development of the bicycle becomes a test case of how and why technology changes the design of an artifact.
